ABSTRACT: This Bachelor's thesis looks at the phenomenon of creepypastas and how they are able to outgrow their internet niche and enter the world of not only the mainstream culture but the mass media as well. Creepypastas develop through a process of communal storytelling and are a result of the return of folk practices on the internet. The participatory culture and transmedia storytelling that is prevalent in these communities make sure that a creepypasta is able to grow into a large community-built "franchise" and tread beyond the boundaries of the internet platforms that served as its place of birth and growth, thus garnering attention from the media industries through their popularity.
